Leaving the Machine Behind Me
LEAVING THE MACHINE BEHIND ME: In late 2017 whilst on holiday in Spain and anticipating retirement from teaching photography, I decided to approach my surroundings with a pad of paper, acrylic paint and oil pastels. I would sit in the sun looking at the hills of Andalusia and wonder, what would happen? It was difficult. A blank sheet of paper anticipating a mark. It was not about framing the scene, as with photography, but a reaction from sight to something directly physical. Not coping or tracing, or any attempt to do so, but the freedom to let it go within the limits of processes unfamiliar. A year later and a return to the same place in Spain, my partner and I discovered the painter Jose Guerrrero in Granada. A revelatory moment to consider how to approach painting.
