Moving to the Midland city of Derby in 1990 from a predominantly rural area of Southern England, made a significant impression upon me. Initially the city was only the place where I studied at University, however I did begin to realise how the industrial and cultural histories of cities like Derby were so important in the development of this country. Living in the city was different also, although having been born in London that was the 1950s and city life had changed. In 1996 I moved to a small terraced house and set about establishing a garden, by planting trees and shrubs, in the attempt to 'envelop' this city space with foliage. The desire to photograph in this newly made environment was less about the specific characteristics of these trees and shrubs but rather the effect upon me of this space, the colours and the variations of light at different times of the day.
